As with any process in academia, the student needs to come up with a research topic that is interesting to them. By having a research topic chosen, the student can find the research that will best fit their interests and skills.
After the student searches for a topic, they need to write about it. The research paper writing process begins by outlining their argument. The outline is used to help the student find their way through the various parts of the paper. The outline helps guide the writer through the process of writing the paper. To begin outlining, the writer must take a look at all of the various ideas that have been expressed in the course. By looking at these ideas, the writer can get a feel for what is discussed in class and what is out of bounds for discussion. After outlining the ideas that are out of bounds, the writer then searches for ideas that are within the bounds of acceptable discussion. After finding the ideas, the writer should spend time writing down what is said about each idea. Doing this will help the writer to find out what is discussed and what is meant to be omitted from the paper. Once the outline is completed, the writer should now search for their essay topic. The essay topic can vary depending on the student's strengths and weaknesses. For example, a writer may find a subject that they are interested in but have a weak grasp on that subject. Instead of spending hours researching on the topic, the writer can turn to their teacher or research article for a good source for the topic. Writing on an essay can be an interesting and challenging process. There are many steps that go into writing an essay. Some of the steps involve reading and reviewing the assigned texts for the day. By reviewing the assigned texts, the writer can look for common themes and words that occur throughout the assignment. The first step of the essay writing process is to look for topics that are common between assignments. There are several general rules that can be followed to help the writer to create a topic that is well thought out. The first rule to follow is to avoid the topic being too general. When a topic is too general, it is impossible to think of an interesting topic because there are many possible topics. The second rule to follow is to avoid a specific topic. A specific topic is a topic that is not relevant to the main body of the paper and does not pertain to the main point of the paper. The essay topic must be related to the point of the paper and vice versa. The third rule to follow is to avoid topics that are already being discussed in class. Researching a topic that is already being discussed is time consuming and difficult. Instead, the writer should keep the topic to themselves and let the professor take care of it.
